Automation W+R GmbH (AWR)

Automation W+R GmbH (AWR) is a leading industrial machine vision system integrator. The middle-sized company with 35 employees in Munich and in total 85 employees in the Automation Group was founded in 1978 and develops and supplies machines for surface inspection and quality control to customers across the globe. The focus is on innovative robotic and automation systems for assembly and testing. AWR gained extraordinary expertise especially in the automatic surface inspection over the years and belongs to the pioneers of industrial image processing.

The Munich-based company develops application specific test systems consisting of surface technology, metrology and robotics as complete solutions, making it particularly successful in serial production of heavy industry, the automotive and the aerospace industry. As a leader in technology AWR has worldwide costumer references, and is, together with its sister companies Boll Automation (Germany), Descam (Germany), Winspect (Austria) and Edixia (France), a leading provider in the field of robot based test systems and machine vision. In particular industrial machine vision is indispensable when manufacturing fault free products. This key technology is the driving force behind superior quality and has become an integral part of manufacturing. Innovations in computer hardware, camera technology, lighting, and software programming facilitate solving even the most complex inspection challenges.

Moreover, AWR continually invests more than 10% of its turnover in research and development and is currently active in several funded research projects such as the Leading-Edge Cluster “MAI carbon”. Especially in the area of composite materials numerous successful 3D surface inspection systems have been established recently. For example safety-critical parts such as C/SiC disk brakes, applied in the automotive sector, are tested with a standardised system solution developed and implemented by AWR.

A further driving force in research and quality assurance is the non-destructive characterization of synthetic surfaces of bonding partners such as carbon composites. Based on the patent of Fraunhofer- Institute for Production Technology and Applied Materials Research (IFAM), AWR is developing an industrial system in close collaboration together with IFAM to achieve market readiness for the Aerosol- Wetting-Test.

Role in the project

AWR will work on the improvement and adaptation of wetting-test for defined fields of application (multiple contaminants) and large-scale surface inspection in low time. The tested surfaces include surfaces with changes of contrast (scarfed surfaces). Furthermore the evaluation of 3-D geometries and the demonstration of the wetting-test technique in a realistic environment are planned. To proof the Aerosol-Wetting Test principle the detection of artificial applied multiple contaminants on adherend surfaces is planned.
